Kumquat (Citrus japonica Thunb.)
The kumquat, also known as Chinese mandarin (Citrus japonica), is a small fruit that surprises with its colour, aroma and flavour. Its thin, bright peel, of an intense orange, encloses a juicy pulp with a unique taste, in which sweet notes intertwine with a slight sour aftertaste, creating a particularly harmonious gustatory balance. Despite its small size, each fruit represents a true concentrate of nutrients and bioactive compounds, appreciated for centuries in the East not only for its fresh and aromatic flavour, but also for its recognised beneficial properties.
Cultivation in Sicily further enhances the qualities of kumquat. The Mediterranean climate, characterised by abundant sunshine, moderate temperature variations and fertile, well-drained soils, gives the fruits a more intense aroma, a particularly juicy pulp and a sweet, fragrant peel, making them even more pleasant on the palate.
